Marsala wine is a fortified wine made near Marsala, on the Italian island of Sicily. Marsala wine is created from white grapes grown in the area. Marsala, like other fortified wines, is fortified with a distilled spirit, most often brandy. The color and age of Marsala determine its classification (and cost). A Marsala wine contains 15-20% ABV as compared to a regular glass of wine's 12 percent alcohol, making it more potent. Because of its strong alcohol content, Marsala is often consumed in modest amounts. A great quality Marsala is also an outstanding sweet wine, even after its reputation as a dry and semi-dry cooking wine.
